With the 2013 CX-5, Mazda is hyping new materials and processes that have made the sports utility bumpers not only significantly lighter, but the lightest bumper around. Mazda has developed a new plastic resin that is both lighter and thinner than its predecessor and when combining the front and back bumper could account for weight savings of 20%.
With the new bumpers being thinner as well as lighter, they don’t have to cool as long once molded; Mazda had done tests and estimates the time will be cut in half. Also of note is that the new bumpers have not lost any of their strength or stability, they’re just as strong as the previous model.
Sounds like a win win for Mazda.
